Sensex tumbles by more than 400 points; Auto and Bank stocks drag markets down

Bank, Auto and financial services led the market to end the week on a bearish note.

Stock Market Down, Sensex Down
Sensex and Nifty tumbled on the last day of the week, pushing the key benchmark indices down by 1.13% and 1.05%, respectively. Sensex closed at 37,877 levels, down by 433 points and Nifty ended the session at 11,181 levels, down by 118.6 points.

European markets were unanimously down with FTSE sliding by 2.18%, DAX slipping by 1.30% and CAC 40 falling by 2.12%. Fresh quarantine rules, along with a record drop in the employment rate led to fresh selling in Europe. The treasury yields declined after rising for five days.

Asian markets were mixed with Nikkei trading up by 0.17% and Shanghai Composite inching up by 1.19% while Hang Seng and Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) slipped by 0.19% and 1.23%, respectively.

Sensex gainers in today’s trade were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, which was up by 2.04%, NTPC gained by 1.38%, Tata Steel inched up by 1.26%, Infosys rose by 0.24% and Titan added 0.43% to its Thursday’s close.

Meanwhile, Sensex losers in today’s trading session were Axis Bank that went down by 2.81%, Mahindra and Mahindra plunged by 2.60%, SBI slipped by 2.68%, HDFC Bank fell by 2.31% and Bajaj Finance tumbled by 2.57%.

BSE Mid-cap Index was down by 1.02%. Shriram City Union Finance was the top mid-cap gainer, up by more than 9%, followed by PNB Housing and JSW Energy with both mid-cap stocks gaining more than 3% each.

BSE Small-cap index was down by 0.85%. Vascon Engineers Ltd was the top small-cap gainer, up by nearly 20%, followed by Redington (India) Ltd, up by 16.10% and Bharat Bijlee, up by more than 16.02%.

All BSE sectoral indices ended in red except BSE Metal index, which was up by 0.20%, BSE Healthcare Index, and BSE Consumer Durables index, which were up by 0.75% and 0.06%, respectively.

BSE Auto index was down by 2.50% and Bankex slipped by 2.18%. BSE Oil and Gas was down by 1.39% even as BSE Telecom fell a little over 1%. BSE IT index was down by 0.37%  while, BSE FMCG index slipped by 1.38%.
