The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is a part of the CII-Godrej Green Business Centre which is actively involved in promoting the Green Building movement in India.

“This certification is a validation of our vision to promote sustainable urbanization by decongesting existing cities and offering the right balance between life, living and livelihood. It is particularly meaningful for a large integrated city covering more than 1500 acres of land since we had to ensure that green principles were followed across, including the industrial, residential, social and infrastructure aspects at Mahindra World City, Chennai”, said Sangeeta Prasad, Chief Executive Officer, Integrated Cities and Industrial Clusters, Mahindra Lifespace Developers Limited

“It is a proud moment for Mahindra World City, Chennai to become India’s first township with IGBC Gold Stage 1 certification. With key sustainability practices like water conservation, rainwater harvesting, xeriscaping, use of solar energy and waste water for landscaping, we at Mahindra World City are a committed to sustainable urbanization”, said Mr Chandru S, Chief Operating Officer, Mahindra World City Developers Limited.

Mahindra World City, Chennai, is the first township to be awarded with Stage I certification under IGBC Green Townships. It was evaluated on four environmental categories as defined by IGBC which included – Site Selection and Planning, Land Use Planning, Transportation Planning and Infrastructure Resource Management and Innovation in Design & Technology.

MWC, Chennai is a city of many firsts in the journey of sustainability. It has been a pioneer in commissioning an Off-grid solar power plant in the State of Tamil Nadu. Located in The Canopy, the 75 kw Off Grid - Solar power plant, has the capacity to generate 1,16,000 units of clean electrical energy annually, offsetting almost 60 tons of CO2. <<PIC Solar Plant>>

The landscaped area of MWC Chennai has used the philosophy of Xeriscaping by planting native plant species which do not consume too much water and are drought resistant. A centralized Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and a Tertiary treatment plant (TTP) which enables treatment of gray water and re use for landscaping, flushing and related operations thereby reducing fresh water requirements.

Rainwater harvesting facilities for the park and recharge pits to collect rain water are imperatives within the city with the companies within Mahindra World City having rainwater harvesting facilities within their campuses. A network of storm water drains has been constructed along all the roads and the entire run-off water from surrounding water bodies and excess rain is conveyed through the storm water drains into the Kolavai Lake.
