Faculty of Engineering & Technology, SRM University, an EMC Academic Alliance Partner, has chosen EMC’s proven VSPEX infrastructure to deliver cloud-computing course to its students. Using the infrastructure, the university post graduate program in cloud computing introduces students to cloud architecture, datacenter virtualization and deployment models. Students are trained on applications including Microsoft SQL server, Oracle, and Pivotal Greenplum database, and those graduating with M. Tech in cloud computing are equipped to become industry practitioners with highly sought after specialist skills.

Elaborating on the program and alliance with EMC, S Rajendran, Professor, Department of IT, SRM University, said, “We realized that there was a strong uptake of cloud computing infrastructure and services and foreign universities were starting to offer cloud technology degree programs. To enable our students to compete effectively in the global environment we needed the right platform. EMC supported us to implement the cloud-computing program and train our faculty members.”

He further added, “We selected VSEPX infrastructure due to the flexibility the solution gives us in the choice of technologies, and the performance delivered through using best-in-class providers.”

The department of Information Technology partnered with Uniware Systems to design and deploy the VSEPX infrastructure comprising EMC VNX unified storage, Dell Servers, HP Networking, and VMware vSphere virtualization.

The IT department has already virtualized 60 percent of its laboratories due to the quick deployment of the infrastructure and its simplified management. Compared to the five administrators the university required previously, only one system administrator is now required for maintenance of the infrastructure.

Speaking about EMC’s academic alliance program, Krishna Kant, Head, EMC Academic Alliance - South Asia & Russia said, “The technology landscape in India is fast evolving guided by megatrends such as social, mobility, analytics and cloud. Through the EMC Academic Alliance Program, it is our endeavor to equip IT students with requisite skills to drive a competitive edge and build their careers in the new IT environment.”

“We are happy to work together with SRM University to enhance career prospects of their students as cloud technology professionals.”

EMC collaborates with colleges and universities worldwide to help prepare students for successful careers in a transforming IT industry; worldwide it has 1500+ universities in 70 countries. The EMC Academic Alliance program offers unique ‘open’ curriculum-based education on technology topics such as cloud computing, big data analytics, and information storage and management. All courseware and faculty training are offered at no cost to qualifying higher education institutions.

Cloud adoption is growing fast and by 2020, 42% of all digital information will be “touched” by the cloud. As per an EMC Zinnov study, to tap the opportunity, around 1,00,000 private cloud practitioners will be needed in India. EMC’s Academic Alliance program aims to reduce this skill gap. The program since its inception in 2005, with Manipal Institute of Technology being the first one to adopt EAA, is now 300+ strong in India with 120,000+ students educated till date. 100+ new Institutions joined EMC Academic Alliance in 2013.
