According to a research from the UK-based Money Advice Service, half of holiday-makers (51%) have not bought travel insurance for their main summer holiday this year, a third of them (34%) admitted they do not intend to buy any, and only 17% of holiday-makers—going abroad or staying in UK—said they plan to buy any insurance.

The survey, conducted among 2,000 UK adults, also reveals that a third (33%) of holiday-makers heading abroad this summer have not purchased any travel insurance (=4.2m adults) and around one million of them admitted they don’t intend to buy any at all (=1m adults). Furthermore, among those holidaying in the UK this summer (about 13m holiday-makers), around nine million of them haven’t bought any travel insurance yet, and 7.8 million said that they don't plan to buy any at all.

At the start of the holiday season, the independent Money Advice Service is urging travellers, whether going abroad or staying in the UK, to ensure they understand the benefits of having travel insurance and the risks of not buying it.

The survey was conducted online by YouGov on behalf of the Money Advice Service. Total sample size was 2,077 adults. Fieldwork undertaken between 9-11 July 2012. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).
