The 9th Global Education Learners Program (GELP) organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) concluded on Friday.

A five day program, GELP is a partnership of thought leaders and consultants from world-class organisations, collaborating in a global community with teams of key education leaders who are seriously committed to transforming education in practice and developing the personal skills they need to lead the changes required.

Chief Guest of the event, Dr.Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State, MHRD, praised GELP for its ability to be able to provide students with tools and the right skill set to become successful, intelligent, discerning individuals. He said, “GELP has brought together years of support and solutions for promotion of good education practises.”

Approximately 75 educators participated from countries like Australia, Victoria (Australia), Brazil, Finland, New Zealand and many others.

The India team, led by Vineet Joshi, Chairman of CBSE has been involved in GELP since 2011.  The team has included former Joint Secretaries, MHRD, together with education leaders affiliated with the CBSE. Typically the teams include senior government education bureaucrats from a range of agencies together with leading academics.

The key themes of GELP India are : 'Learner agency' - individual students (and groups of students) having a major influence in determining their individual learning journey; 'New players' - refers to the myriad of new organisations and networks that are actually and potentially playing a part in the development of 21st century education; 'New metrics' - what indicators and measures should we use to judge the success of 21st century education, both at the level of an education system and for individual students.
Shri  Vineet Joshi, Chairman, CBSE, filled with pride, said, “It is a pleasure to find solutions for a subject so close to our heart. It is a challenge to develop a skilled workforce. As educators, the onus to shape the curriculum, affecting the lives of millions of students, is on us.”

Also present at the event were Shri Rajashri Bhattacharya, Secretary, School Education and Literacy, Mr.Anthony Mackay and Dr.Vicki Phillips, Co-Chairs, GELP and Dr. Sadhana Parashar, Director (Training & Academics), CBSE.

Mr. Anthony Mackay, Co-Chair, GELP, delighted at the vibrant work that CBSE is churning out, said, “India is a microcosm of the most amazing communities in the world, not to mention with respect to Education. We are delighted see some of the most progressive education practises being ideated by Team India.”

Team India has contributed to GELP by emphasizing that values education is central to equipping students for an increasing interconnected world and society, a theme to be explored in detail at the GELP Sydney event in May 2013.
