On 31st July, the Haryana government said it has brought paddy under crop insurance scheme for Kharif 2012-13. Under the Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (MNAIS), paddy will be covered during Kharif 2012-13 for the purpose of the crop insurance, the Haryana agriculture department said in a notification.

Under MNAIS, indemnity level or protection plan will be 90% and sum insured will be Rs. 45,700 per hectare in all the districts covered under the scheme. The scheme will be implemented in Karnal, Kaithal, Jind and Rohtak districts, it said.

The implementing agencies for the scheme will be Agriculture Insurance Company of India in Karnal, Kaithal and Jind districts and Iffco-Tokio General Insurance in Rohtak.
For crops and areas—where MNAIS is being implemented, the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme or Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme will not be available on the same crop, the notification said.

All farmers growing the paddy crop in the specified areas are eligible for coverage under the scheme. The scheme will be compulsory for all loanee farmers who have availed crop loans from banks for notified crop in their notified areas. However, the scheme will be voluntary for non-loanee farmers growing the crop.
