Rupee strengthens by 19 paise to 82.19 / $

Early on Friday, due to widespread dollar weakness and a strong trend in local equities, the rupee strengthened 19 paise to 82.19 against the US dollar. The local unit began trading at 82.30 versus the dollar on the interbank foreign exchange, then advanced to 82.19, gaining 19 paise from its previous close.

Concerning the US dollar, the rupee ended the day on Thursday 9 paise higher at 82.38. The dollar index, a measure of the dollar’s strength versus a basket of six different currencies, decreased by 0.23% to 104.53. The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 25.7 points, or 0.04 %, at 62,596.38 on the domestic equity market. The larger NSE Nifty increased by 18.628.60 points or 0.1%.

According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,131.67 crore on Thursday, making them net sellers in the capital markets.
