Don’t forget to cross the cheque on the left-top corner with two parallel lines. It’s important to write "Account Payee” between these lines to ensure credit to the intended payee.

Despite the growing popularity of the electronic mode, cheque is still a key instrument for making payments and remittances. But the reduced usage has indeed made people vulnerable to making mistakes while writing cheques. Since these errors can cost money, it’s prudent to follow this check-list rather than do a rushed job:

Cross cheque and strike-off Bearer: Don’t forget to cross the cheque on the left-top corner with two parallel lines. It’s important to write "Account Payee” between these lines to ensure credit to the intended payee. Else, the cheque bearer can draw cash over the counter without your knowledge. Like-wise, strike-off the word "Bearer" on the cheque for the same reason.

A line after name & amount: After you have written the name and amount in words, put a line to cross the blank space. This will effectively eliminate the possibility of cheque misuse as the open space provides an opportunity for miscreants for manipulation.

"/-" after amount in figures: A simple sign of "/-", prevents misuse, denying any one the opportunity to add more numbers.
