Thapar Polytechnic, part of the nationally renowned Thapar Technology Campus, Patiala, has entered into a collaboration with Heraud Training and Education, a skill training provider and education think tank headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, to provide industry-relevant vocational courses under the Star scheme of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

This tie-up will enable the transfer of expertise and best teaching practices from Australia, including industry-relevant curriculum, real-life training facilities, certified and experienced trainers and quality/audit frameworks.

Recognising the need for skill development in India, we constantly strive to prepare our students for the global challenges of the 21st century through quality technical education. Our tie-up with Heraud Training and Education is an effort in this direction, which will help a lot in increasing the employability as well as the global mobility of the students, said Thapar University Director Prof Prakash Gopalan.

Heraud Training and Education, established with the aim of implementing innovative learning models, has launched its initiatives in India through its Indian subsidiary Heraud Education Trust, in association with Technical and Further Education (TAFE), an independent statutory corporation of the Government of South Australia. TAFE is Australias largest vocational education provider which conducts over 1,000 courses for more than 80,000 students annually.

The vocational courses at Thapar Polytechnic, based on TAFE best practices and adapted to Indian requirements, will be offered under three broad categories: short-term NSDC-approved Star courses of a duration of one-two months to address specific employability skill requirements of the Indian industry covering the automotive, IT and IT-enabled services, telecom, electronics and construction sectors, which will be followed by specialised and longer-duration advanced diploma and certificate courses for existing students.

Established in 1956, Thapar Polytechnic has established itself as a leading polytechnic in the country over the past few decades, offering diploma courses in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, architectural assistantship, electronics & communication engineering and information technology. It was adjudged as the best polytechnic of the northern region in the years 1999-00 and 2005-06.
