Asian markets plunge amid concerns over new Covid variant; Japan, Hong Kong drop more than 2%

Asian stock markets plunged on Friday amid fears over a new variant of Covid-19 that reportedly has multiple mutations.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index saw sharp losses, plummeting 2.67% at 24,080.52, whereas the Nikkei 225 in Japan tanked 2.53% at 28,751.62 while the Topix index fell 2.01% to 1,984.98.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite declined 0.56% to close at 3,564.09 while the Shenzhen component finished the trading day 0.342% lower at 14,777.17. South Korea’s Kospi closed 1.47% lower at 2,936.44 and the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia fell 1.73% on the day to 7,279.30.

As per media reports, the variant has been detected in Hong Kong, according to South Africa’s Minister of Health Joe Phaahla.

US markets were closed yesterday due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 700 points.

Meanwhile, in European markets, the pan-European Stoxx 600 tumbled 3.2% with travel and leisure stocks cratering 6.2% to lead losses as all sectors and major bourses fell sharply.
