Asian markets trade mixed; U.S. presidential debate in focus

In South Korea, the Kospi rose 0.86%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was below the flatline, the Nikkei 225 advanced 0.12% while the Topix index rose 0.22%.

Asian stock markets were mixed in Tuesday afternoon trade with the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong dipped 0.58%. Mainland Chinese stocks were higher, with the Shanghai Composite up 0.58% and the Shenzhen Component added 1.168%.

In South Korea, the Kospi rose 0.86%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was below the flatline, the Nikkei 225 advanced 0.12% while the Topix index rose 0.22%.

On the political front, President Trump and Joe Biden would face off in the first presidential debate later today.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic crossed the 1 million mark. About half of the world’s Covid-19 fatalities were reported in just four countries - the U.S., Brazil, India and Mexico, as per Hopkins data.

Meanwhile, Wall Street rallied to close sharply higher on Monday as investors sought bargains among sectors hardest-hit by the coronavirus recession, now limping toward its ninth month.
