Indian benchmark indices ended higher in an extremely volatile session on Wednesday. The Sensex rose 172 points at 40,412, while the Nifty ended above 11,900.

All sectors finished higher except media and PSU bank.

Nifty IT and Realty led gains throughout the day followed by Financial Services.

Top gainers include GAIL, Zee Entertainment, NTPC, IOC and ONGC, while losers include Yes Bank, Hindalco Industries, Vedanta, Hero MotoCorp and Bharti Airtel.

Shares of Yes Bank ended 14% lower after the bank's board meet regarding capital infusion from institutional investors.

The Indian rupee erased morning gains but was trading higher by 7 paise at 70.85/$.

On the economy front, the Asian Development Bank cut India's FY20 GDP growth forecast to 5.1% from 6.5% as it is of the view that consumption was affected by slow job growth and rural distress, which was aggravated by poor harvest.

Meanwhile, Asian markets closed mixed with the Hang Seng up 0.79%, the Shanghai Composite rose 0.24%. The Nikkei 225, on the other hand, lost 0.08%.
