October IIP at -1.8%

Index of Industrial Production(IIP) for the month of October 2013 stands at 168.5, which is 1.8% lower as compared to the level in the month of October 2012. The cumulative growth for the period April-October 2013-14 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 0.0%. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of October 2013 stand at 118.1, 178.8 and 162.6 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of (-) 3.5%, (-) 2.0% and 1.3% as compared to October 2012 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-October 2013-14 over the corresponding period of 2012-13 has been (-) 2.7%, (-) 0.3% and 5.3% respectively.In terms of industries, ten (10) out of the twenty two (22) industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-2004) in the manufacturing sector have shown negative growth during the month of October 2013 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group ‘Furniture; manufacturing n.e.c.’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 28.9%, followed by (-) 27.2% in ‘Office, accounting & computing machinery’ and (-) 23.0% in ‘Radio, TV and communication equipment & apparatus’. On the other hand, the industry group ‘Electrical machinery & apparatus n.e.c.’ has shown a positive growth of 34.2% followed by 14.7% in ‘Other transport equipment’ and 9.3% in ‘Medical, precision & optical instruments, watches and clocks’...Read More

CPI inflation at 11.24% in November

Provisional annual inflation rate based on all India general CPI (Combined) for November 2013 on point to point basis (November 2013 over November 2012) is 11.24% as compared to 10.17% (final) for the previous month of October 2013. The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas for November 2013 are 11.74% and 10.53% respectively. Inflation rates (final) for rural and urban areas for October 2013 are 10.19% and 10.20% respectively.

Election results: BJP wins MP, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh

The BJP set to end up with two-thirds majority in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh,with the ruling Congress party conceding defeat. In Delhi, BJP was holding a clear edge over the Congress, with Aam Aadmi Party came with a stunning debut in Delhi. In Delhi, BJP was leading in 34 constituencies, the AAP was ahead in 26 seats and the Congress in 7. BJP has worried all day about Chhattisgarh, where it is been engaged in close tussle with the Congress. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit submitted her resignation to Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung. "I would like to thank everyone for their support. We will analyze what went wrong later," Dikshit said.

In Rajasthan, the BJP's Vasundhara Raje was ahead of the Congress' Ashok Gehlot government, with a whopping 160 of the 199 Rajasthan seats where polling was held. In Rajasthan, BJP leads in 156 seats while the Congress is ahead in 24 seats, others in 19 seats. While in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP is marching ahead to victory in 158 seats while the Congress is ahead in only 62 seats, others are winning in 10 seats. In Chhattisgarh, BJP is ahead in 44 seats, the Congress in 43 seats and others in 3 seats. Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress has the ability to transform themselves and the party will do that in the forthcoming general elections. Congress president Sonia Gandhi congratulated the opponents on their victories."Naturally this results calls for deep introspection... We have to look into the way we took or didn't take our message to the people," Sonia Gandhi reported.

Hiring marginally up 1% in Nov’13 over Oct’13: Naukri

The Naukri Job Speak Index for the month of November 2013 was at 1,300 showing a 1% growth in hiring, when compared to October’13. Annual comparison shows that hiring activity has witnessed a 16% increase in Nov’13 as compared to Nov’12. Industry wise hiring sentiment was positive but weak in Nov’13 except in IT-Software which has seen an upward trend with the index moving up by 10% in Nov’13 when compared to Oct’13. Sectors like insurance and telecom saw double digit decline with the index moving down by 29% and 17% respectively in the same period. Among the top metros, Kolkata has shown the maximum increase in hiring with the index moving up by 14% in Nov’13 when compared to Oct’13.

South Asians need to exercise for 20 minutes longer than Europeans

New research has suggested men of South Asian origin may need to exercise for approximately 20 minutes a day longer than their Europeans counterparts. Current physical activity guidelines recommend that all adults take at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (equivalent to walking briskly for 30 minutes on 5 days of the week) per week. However, the evidence that these guidelines are based on is largely derived from studies of populations of white European origin. 60% of RIO participants are not prepared for retirement: Cerulli

According to new research from global analytics firm Cerulli Associates, more than 60% of retirement income opportunity (RIO) participants are not confident they are prepared for retirement. Cerulli defines RIO participants as active 401(k) participants age 55 and older. "Unfortunately many individuals are forced into retirement due to job loss or health concerns for themselves or a family member," states Kevin Chisholm, associate director at Cerulli. "This means that an individual needs to be prepared for retirement before the age they expect to retire." 3 in 5 Indian travellers take items from hotel rooms: TripAdvisor

Two-thirds (65%) of global travellers and 58% of Indian travellers admit to taking something from a hotel following their stay, with toiletries being the most popular pilfered items. Three in five (59%) global hoteliers and 61% of Indian hotel owners report that their guests often take a variety of items when they leave.
