Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), an initiative of the United Nations, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Gujarat on 12 January 2014 during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. The intent of the MoU is to establish a framework for collaboration between SE4ALL and the state government on activities that would support SE4ALL objectives.

Vibrant Gujarat, a  biennial event taking place from 11 -13 January, brings together Head of States, leading national and international business leaders, economists, policy makers, investment bankers, multilateral institutions, academicians and thought leaders from across the world. This year's event focuses on Sustainable Energy for All, Smart Cities, Water Management, Climate Change, Health for All and Global Competitiveness of Small and Medium Enterprises - topics that are closely aligned with the post-2015 development agenda. As a partner organization, Sustainable Energy for All will be hosting two sessions:  Frontier Technologies to Scale up Integration of Renewables and Sustainability through Energy Efficiency.

India is about to launch a massive program of scaling up renewables and Gujarat is one of the front runner states in solar energy. Gujarat is also very keen to improve energy efficiency and is looking to tap global knowledge. The joint collaboration would help catalyze technical assistance to Gujarat to develop sustainable energy pathways and facilitate Gujarat's collaboration with global institutions in the research & development of renewables. Gujarat will also join the initiative’s Global Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform established in support of SE4ALL’s global target of doubling of the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030.

“Key areas of collaboration will include catalyzing technical support to assist the Government of Gujarat and its entities to develop strategic pathways for sustainable energy and implement plans for achieving those objectives,” said Mohinder Gulati, the initiative’s Chief Operating Officer.  "We will share best practices and support Gujarat’s collaboration with global institutions and the private sector in research, development, deployment of renewable technologies to bring down costs, and increase economic and operational efficiency of renewables in Gujarat’s energy system,” underscored COO Gulati

With the conventional sources of energy gradually depleting, and the cost of harnessing energy increasing every day, there is a need to utilize every possible source of energy in a sustainable, cost effective and environment friendly manner. Promoting sustainable energy is also linked to ensuring better education, healthcare and environment protection, which can ultimately boost global efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals. In this context, renewable energy and energy efficiency stand out as key drivers of the global energy scenario, which possess the potential to architect a sustainable energy future for us and for generations to come.

The energy sector in India represents a basket of opportunities for socioeconomic development. Not only is India blessed with abundant natural resources and renewable energy potential, but millions of people still lack access to energy, electricity and clean fuels. In an effort to confront this issue, the state of Gujarat has ramped up its efforts towards sustainable energy, and promoting development across all levels of the socio-economic pyramid through multiple renewable energy and energy efficiency measure

Energy lies at the core of all countries interests; from job creation to economic development, from security concerns to the full empowerment of women. In September 2011, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the Sustainable Energy for All initiative and shared his vision for how governments, business and civil society, working in partnership, can make sustainable energy for all a reality by 2030.
