August saw a 4.9% year-over-year decline in India’s power consumption to 144.2 billion units, mostly as a result of widespread rainfall that dropped temperatures.
Additionally, there was a 4.2% decrease in electricity use from July, which suggests fewer cooling appliance uses.
On the other hand, 57% more units—152.4 billion—were drawn for consumption in June than in August. Another consequence of the nonstop rains last month was a dramatic decline in power costs on the Indian Energy Exchange. Between August 1 and August 28, the day-ahead market’s (DAM) average daily price was ₹4.33 per unit, which is 35.5% less than it was during the same time previous year.
August was warmer and there was less rainfall than it was the year before, which increased the need for cooling and irrigation.
The peak demand for power has also decreased; on August 31, the required amount of electricity was recorded at about 207 GW, compared to 236.6 GW. With 39.8 million tons of coal on August 30, power plants also have adequate supplies of coal. This equates to roughly eighteen to nineteen days of intake.
The Indian Meteorological Department reports that the nation received 287.1 mm of rain in August, which is almost 16% more than the average of 248.1 mm.
