According to the National Electricity Plan 2022-32, which was announced on Monday by the Central Electricity Authority, India aims to have 650,000 circuit miles of transmission line capacity by the end of FY32.
In the preceding five-year plan FY17-FY22, India added 88,865 circuit km of transmission lines, and by the end of the time, the total capacity was 460,000 circuit km.
Transmission capacity in the power sector is crucial with the installation of more producing units and the incorporation of renewable energy. The decision comes in the wake of the government’s large-scale push to offer 24×7 power for all and a greater emphasis on renewable energy.
According to the power ministry, the country’s present transmission capacity is approximately 480,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines.
The CEA, the electricity ministry’s planning department, has divided the projected period in two. Between FY27 and FY32, it aims to add 76,787 circuit km of gearbox capacity.
In addition, 32,250 MW of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) bi-pole capacity is expected to be built over the period.
In FY23-27, India is expected to build 114,000 circuit km and 1,000 MW of HVDC bi-pole capacity.
At the conclusion of FY27, gearbox capacity is estimated to be 570,000 circuit km.
