Standing basmati crops have been harmed in Haryana, the state that produces 60% of the nation’s supply of this aromatic rice variety, which would probably result in higher pricing for it. The paddy crop was damaged at a time when prices for all types of rice were on the rise.
At this point, moisture is a key worry for the basmati crop since it degrades the quality of the rice.
According to Vinod Kaul, executive director of the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA), “heavy rainfall in Haryana has affected the basmati paddy harvest,” he told ET. “Although the amount of the damage is still unknown, this year’s Kharif production will undoubtedly be impacted. Prices will stay stable because there won’t be as much supply ” he explained.
Since last Thursday, there have been frequent downpours across the whole basmati belt in Haryana, from Sonipat and Panipat to Karnal, Kurukshetra, and Ambala.
Every year, 8.5—9.0 million tonnes of basmati rice are produced in the nation. 3.94 million tonnes of the type were sold by India to the US as well as West Asian nations like Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen in FY22.
Due to the rice mills’ ability to dry paddy, the basmati rice industry has urged the Haryana government to permit farmers to deliver their harvest there rather than to mandis.
Around 1,200 mills in Haryana have paddy drying equipment.
