In order to fulfill the coal needs of power plants during the ongoing fiscal year, Coal India Ltd has set a target of providing around 610 million tonnes of coal to power plants, which is a 4% increase from the previous year.
Furthermore, the company has estimated that its coal production for the financial year 2023-24 will be approximately 780 million tonnes.
On Wednesday, the company stated that its contribution towards the expected demand for coal by domestic power plants for the year would be slightly more than 74%.
In anticipation of a surge in demand for coal due to predictions of a hot summer, the company intends to boost its production levels in the first quarter while also ensuring ample coal reserves are maintained at the mine sites.
According to the company, the accessibility of coal to the ‘non-regulated sector’ is expected to be significantly improved in the ongoing financial year, even after accounting for any unanticipated increase in demand from thermal power plants. This is a positive development compared to the previous year.
In the preceding fiscal year, the supply of coal to the non-regulated sector amounted to 108 million tonnes.
As of April 1, the total domestic coal inventory in India was estimated to be approximately 125 million tonnes. Out of this, around 69.6 million tonnes were present at pitheads, 34.6 million tonnes at thermal power plants, while sheds, washeries, captive mines, and ports had a collective stockpile of 13.7 million tonnes.
