The ship’s handover ceremony took place today at CSL’s Cochin headquarters.
The acceptance form was signed by Madhu S. Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL, and Commodore Vidhyadhar Harke, VSM, the vessel’s Commanding Officer (Designate).
The vessel is set to be commissioned and inducted into the Indian Navy and the country’s service in August 2022.
The IAC is the largest warship ever built in India, with a deep displacement of approximately 45,000 tons, and is also considered the country’s most ambitious warship project. It is unprecedented in size and complexity when compared to any ship (commercial or defense) built in India to date.
The vessel is a massive steel structure of 21,500 tons of special grade steel developed in-house and used for the first time in Indian Naval Ships.
The vessel’s enormity can be gauged by approximately 2300 kms of cabling, 120 kms of piping, and over 2300 compartments available onboard. The vessel’s propulsion is provided by four gas turbines in a COGAG (Combined Gas and Gas) configuration.
The IAC is outfitted with a slew of cutting-edge technologies, including network-centric distributed data processing and control systems, an intricate Aviation Facility Complex, cutting-edge weapons and sensors, and one of the most powerful propulsion and power generation and distribution (PGD) systems ever installed on a ship.
The ship was launched on August 12, 2013, and with it, India joined the elite club of nations capable of designing and building an Aircraft Carrier in-house.
