Complete adherence to procedures for approving nano-urea fertilizers: Govt

5 Sep 2022 , 07:39 AM

On the basis of encouraging field results and input from agricultural scientists at ICAR and state institutions, the government on Sunday declared that established procedures had been adhered to in full. However, nano urea has been given provisional approval.

As a substitute for regular urea, cooperation IFFCO introduced nano urea in liquid form in June 2021. In order to make nano urea, it has set up manufacturing facilities and is also selling in the market.

It is clarified that the established and current method for registering any fertilizer for notification as per Fertilizer Control Order (FCO), 1985 has been completely accounted for, according to a statement from the Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry.

According to the FCO’s 1985 fertilizer introduction procedure, which only requires data from two seasons, Nano Urea has been temporarily approved for use.

In a statement that provided clarity on some stories, it was said that “Nano Urea has been provisionally registered under FCO based on encouraging results and input obtained from scientists of ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) and State Agricultural Universities.”

For safety and bio-safety concerns, the Department of Biotechnology has also been referred.

According to the ministry, “Nano Urea has only been included under FCO as a separate category of nano fertilizer after satisfaction with regard to efficacy, biosafety, and bio toxicity.”

Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, stated in July of this year that India might not require urea imports after 2025 as domestic production of traditional urea and nano liquid urea supply may be adequate to meet the domestic demand.

About 440 million 500 ml bottles of nano urea will be created by FY25. This will be roughly 20 million tonnes of urea equivalent. The 9 million tonnes that India imports each year will be handled by it.

Domestic urea output in the nation is roughly 26 million tonnes, but demand is roughly 35 million tonnes. The shortfall is also filled by imports.
