Welspun Corp Ltd (WCL) has teamed up with Tata Steel to create the “foundation for and subsequent fabrication” of pipes for the transportation of pure hydrogen and hydrogen combined with natural gas.
While Welspun Corp Ltd, the Welspun Group’s main firm, is a prominent welded line pipe maker, Tata Steel is one of India’s top three steel producers.
“Welspun Corp Ltd and Tata Steel Ltd have signed an MoU to collaboratively create the framework for and then manufacture green pipes for the transportation of pure hydrogen and hydrogen combined with natural gas,” according to a statement from WCL.
The purpose of the green energy strategic partnership with Tata Steel is to evaluate the suitability of a variety of pipes manufactured by WCL for the transportation of future fuels, which will help mitigate climate change-related issues and build a secure future for future generations, according to the company.
According to Welspun Corp, this MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) would improve worldwide understanding and knowledge of hydrogen transportation.
Welspun Corp joined the H2Pipe Joint Industry Project on Hydrogen Pipelines, which was established by DNV AS Energy Systems Pipeline Technology, a major industrial certifying authority, in October 2021.
The “world’s first guideline” for transportation of hydrogen gas in existing and new offshore pipelines was developed as part of a worldwide industry effort. “We are aiming to improve its increasing product range both in India and abroad while concentrating on developing a future-ready world,” stated Vipul Mathur, Managing Director, and CEO of Welspun Corp Limited.
“The relationship is a crucial milestone in our path towards sustainability,” said Rajeev Singhal, Vice President of Marketing & Sales (Flat Products), Tata Steel.
“This will allow us to jointly develop steel for safe hydrogen gas transportation, which is a crucial condition for hydrogen fuel adoption in accordance with the government’s National Hydrogen Mission.”
