Early on Wednesday morning, an Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC) pipeline under the Yamuna ruptured close to a village in the Baghpat region of western Uttar Pradesh, sending locals into a state of terror.
Online videos of the incident showed a water spout rising approximately 25 feet into the air.
In order to stop the leak, the IOC, which manages the Dadri-Panipat Natural Gas Pipeline (DPPL), cut off supplies at both ends. Even though inhabitants of Jagos hamlet, which is located by the river close to the location where the suspected pipeline burst occurred about 4 am, claimed the boom was so loud that many felt vibrations inside their homes, no injuries were reported.
The problem is under control, according to IOC officials who talked to the Indian Express, and the pipeline is being fixed. The company’s pipes section said that further site inspection and water in the Yamuna receding will determine the precise source of the breach. It read, ‘Immediate action has been taken to stop operations of the Dadri-Panipat pipeline, resulting in no further gas leakage.’
There is no harm to the environment (water or soil), to property, or to human life, the business added. Officials of the local government are present at the scene. Gas is currently being supplied from a different source and is likely to resume soon.
According to Baghpat District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh who talked to the Indian Express, the government is giving the corporation every assistance possible to repair the pipeline.
The 132 km long Dadri-Panipat Natural Gas Pipeline is owned and operated by the IOC and is connected to the Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur Pipeline/Dahej-Vijaipur Pipeline (HVJPL/DVPL) network of GAIL in Dadri.
As a common carrier pipeline, it was put into service in 2010 to carry natural gas (R-LNG, or regasified liquefied natural gas) from the HVJPL/DVPL network to the IOCL Panipat Refinery and Panipat Naphtha Cracker Plant, as well as nine other clients in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
