Maharashtra, the leading sugar-producing state in India, is expected to produce record amounts of sugar for the second year in a row as a result of farmers expanding the cane crop’s growing area, the state administration announced on Monday.
Increased output will put pressure on local pricing and could lead New Delhi to permit sugar exports beginning on October 1 of the 2022—2023 marketing year. Indian exports might have an impact on sugar prices globally.
According to the state government, Maharashtra could produce 13.8 million tonnes of sugar throughout the season, a modest increase from 13.7 million tonnes last year.
The season is anticipated to last 160 days and cane crushing will begin at state mills on October 15.
Last week, Reuters was informed by government sources that India is prepared to permit 5 million tonnes of sugar exports in the initial phase of the next marketing year, which will start in October.
