The Steel Authority of India (SAIL) intends to begin trial production of head hardened (HH) rails, which would be utilised in metro rail and freight corridor projects, by the end of the month, according to its Chairman Amarendu Prakash.
The public sector utility (PSU) planned to begin trial manufacturing of HH rails in August, but postponed it due to the Indian Railways’ demand for standard rails such as 880 grade, Prakash stated.
‘We’ve got the technology. We had planned for it (HH rail production), but they (Railways) asked us to postpone the trials, which are currently scheduled for the end of October,’ said Chairman Amarendu Prakash.
HH rails are high-speed freight rails that are used in metro rail projects and high-speed freight lines. These rails are made with head hardening technology and can withstand 50% more pressure than standard rails.
SAIL has established facilities for the manufacturing of HH rails at its Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh, and cold testing for the same has already been completed.
The PSU will be the second in India to begin producing HH rails. Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) manufactures HH rails at its Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, factory.
