According to news reports, Vedanta Group, a natural resources giant, and Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronics contract maker, both applied separately to the government to establish semiconductor fabrication facilities in India.
According to the reports, both companies have provided information on their potential technology partners and the money for the chip fabrication units. An official told ET that the government is reviewing their suggestions and having ‘dialogue’ with them to resolve any outstanding issues.
In an effort to construct a semiconductor factory in India, Foxconn has partnered with the European firm STMicroelectronics NV, according to a report from Bloomberg earlier in the day. According to the article, the partnership will build a 40 nm chip facility.
Emails addressed to Vedanta and Foxconn asking for more information on the bids they had submitted to the government received no response.
In order to establish a chip production facility in Gujarat, the Vedanta Group and Foxconn previously formed a joint venture, Vedanta Foxconn Semiconductors Ltd. Foxconn quit the joint venture over a year after it was first announced, but it said that it was still committed to establishing a chip production facility in India.
