Shyam Metalics & Energy plans to make aluminum foil for lithium-ion cell manufacturing

26 Sep 2023 , 08:45 AM

Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited, an integrated metal producer, announced its foray into the energy storage market on Monday with battery-grade aluminum foil, a key component in lithium-ion cells.

The Kolkata-based company produces and exports aluminum foil for a variety of industrial uses, with an annual manufacturing capacity of 20,000 tons.

The company stated that 350 tons of high-quality and uniform-thickness aluminum foil is required for the production of 1GWh (Gigawatt-hour) of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells, which power a wide range of electric cars and energy storage systems. The demand for sodium-ion batteries, which use aluminum foils as both positive and negative current collectors, is predicted to double.

According to the business, the tailored battery aluminum foil from Shyam Metalics with thicknesses ranging from 12-micron to 20-micron has been tested and validated by third-party laboratories.

India spent $1.8 billion to import 5,486.18 kWh lithium-ion batteries between April and November 2022, compared to $1.83 billion in 2021-22, indicating an increase in imports due to rising demand for electric vehicles and green energy solutions.
