Tata Steel has entered into a partnership with Germany’s SMS group to explore the development of a low-carbon steel-making process.
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), both companies will engage in further technical discussions and take necessary actions to conduct a Joint Industrial Demonstration of the EASyMelt technology, which has been developed by SMS group, according to a statement by Tata Steel.
The demonstration will take place at the E Blast Furnace in Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions by over 50% compared to the baseline operation of the blast furnace.
The EASyMelt (electric-assisted syngas smelter) technology is an innovative iron-making solution that can be implemented in existing integrated steel plants to accelerate the process of decarbonization.
Let’s hear it from the CEO: T V Narendran, CEO & MD of Tata Steel, expressed the company’s commitment to finding solutions that facilitate the transition to green steel production, contributing to a sustainable future. Given that India is the world’s second-largest steel producer,
Tata Steel recognizes its responsibility to lead the country’s journey towards decarbonization. Tata Steel plans to deepen its collaboration with SMS group to access advanced technologies and processes that will help reduce the carbon footprint in a meaningful and consistent manner.
The company has made decarbonization a priority and has set a target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045.
