Global Top automakers turn to India for engineers according to the news report by “Economic Times”. In the past year, Daimler Truck set up a new Research & Development hub in India, while Mercedes-Benz and Volvo have expanded their existing facilities in the country.
Accordingly, the worldwide shift towards electrification and autonomous vehicles is driving demand for software engineers, a largely untapped category for car makers until now.
Work around electric batteries and hydrogen-powered fuel cells is being driven out of India, apart from the software and electronics that go inside the car.
Recruitment firm Antal said global capability centres of auto firms are expanding in cities like Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi and Bengaluru.
In the last quarter, there was a 12—15% increase in mandates within engineering and IT functions, with hiring for roles in artificial intelligence, digital transformation, machine learning and business intelligence.
“The auto industry is undergoing a total disruption and the skills needed today are very divergent from the past,” said Raghavendra Vaidya, managing director of Daimler Truck Innovation Center India. “When it comes to product engineering, there’s no better location than India to build a strong and capable engineering team.”
In an exclusive interview, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said, “I am confident as transport minister that within three years, we are going to establish all kinds of technology manufacturing in India and the country will be the No. 1 manufacturing hub for automobiles in the world within five years. We aim to make the turnover of this sector Rs 15 lakh crore from 7.5 lakh crore.”
