Extentia’s SOS – Stay Safe! application has won the 2014 South West India Manthan award for e-Women & Empowerment. The award was presented during a gala event today at the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA) in Pune’s Rajbhavan. The application was selected for the honor from over 180 entries from 12 states across south and western India.
SOS – Stay Safe! (http://sosstaysafe.com) is a first of its kind application that turns Android smartphones into discreet personal safety devices. Using revolutionary technology, users are able to request assistance in an emergency with almost no effort.
The Manthan Award is an annual prize for South Asia, given in recognition of exceptional digital content creation. Nominations are accepted from the public, and multiple awards are given across several categories.
Established in 2004, the award is issued by the Digital Empowerment Foundation in partnership with World Summit Award, Department of Information Technology, Government of India, and other stakeholders engaged in promoting digital content inclusiveness. It has come to define the best in e-content and digital practices for development in the entire Asia region.
The 2014 event’s theme was empowerment with digital technology, particularly its inclusion for development. Through the day there were sessions on e-science and technology, e-education and learning, e-governance, e-agriculture, e-news journalism, and e-women empowerment.
Ahead of the award ceremony, SOS – Stay Safe! was presented at the event, with an interactive demonstration for the audience. Extentia’s team spoke about its importance as a handy emergency tool, with details on the app’s features, user reviews, and future plans. It was compared it to insurance as an essential item, with the hope that it would not need to be used.
The presentation attracted a lot of interest, with several curious volunteers that tried the application. The Manthan award was received by members of the actual development team that built SOS – Stay Safe!
How SOS – Stay Safe! Works in a Personal Emergency:
On shaking the phone discreetly, or clicking the power button three times in succession, it sends:
- An automatic text message/SMS and/or an email to the user’s contacts with a name and a voice recording
- The user’s exact location
- The battery level of the phone
- These are sent at regular intervals to provide real time GPS tracking for the user’s location
- Messages are sent unnoticeably — without the user having to even look at the device
- Any ordinary phone can receive messages from this app
‘Extentia’s SOS – Stay Safe! application demonstrates our commitment to personal security with the use of innovative technology,’ said Umeed Kothavala, CEO, Extentia. “It highlights the need for safety and alleviates a citizen’s security concerns effectively. For SOS – Stay Safe!, we are eager to partner with organizations that work to facilitate a safer society, from all over the world. Extentia welcomes inquiries and ideas from them.’
SOS — Stay Safe! is an innovative safety app for women, senior citizens, and anyone who needs assistance in an urgent situation. It is designed to get you help with minimal or unnoticeable effort.
