Reliance Industries Jio adds 16 lakh users in April: TRAI

Telecom subscriber base was down over 82 lakh users during the first month of the nation-wide lockdown, April 2020.

According to the latest subscription data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released on Friday said that the Reliance Jio was the only Reliance Industries Jio adds 15.7 lakh users in April: TRAI telecom service provider who saw a positive user base change, adding 16 lakh new subscribers in April. On the other hand, Bharti Airtel saw the largest decline in user base at 52 lakh and Vodafone Idea also lost 45 lakh users in April 2020. Telecom subscriber base was down over 82 lakh users during the first month of the nation-wide lockdown, April 2020.

The number of telephone subscribers in India decreased from 1,180.84 million at the end of Feb-20 to 1,177.97 million at the end of Mar-20, thereby showing a monthly decline rate of 0.24%. Urban telephone subscription decreased from 661.23 million at the end of Feb-20 to 656.46 million at the end of Mar-20, however the rural subscription increased from 519.62 million to 521.51 million during the same period. The monthly growth rates of urban and rural telephone subscription were -0.72% and 0.36% respectively during the month of Mar-20, as per TRAI report.

Total wireless subscribers (2G, 3G & 4G) decreased from 1,160.59 million at the end of Feb-20 to 1,157.75 million at the end of Mar-20, thereby registering a monthly decline rate of 0.24%. Wireless subscription in urban areas decreased from 643.24 million at the end of Feb20 to 638.48 million at the end of Mar20 however wireless subscription in rural areas increased from 517.34 million at the end of Feb-20 to 519.27 million at the end of Mar-20. Monthly growth rates of urban and rural wireless subscription were -0.74% and 0.37% respectively.

Wireline subscribers decreased from 20.26 million at the end of Feb-20 to 20.22 million at the end of Mar-20. Net decline in the wireline subscriber base was 0.04 million with a monthly decline rate of 0.20%. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers were 88.91% and 11.09% respectively at the end of Mar-20.

As on 31st March, 2020, the top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd (387.52 million), Bharti Airtel (146.10 million), Vodafone Idea (117.43 million), BSNL (16.43 million) and MTNL (0.18 million).
