Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) will build 1 gigatonne (GW) of renewable energy capacity in Rajasthan as the country’s second-largest state oil refiner pivots toward a net zero emission target by 2040.
According to a statement, BPCL has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Rajasthan to build a renewable energy power plant. It did not, however, provide a timetable or the amount of money that will be invested in the project.
The company has set an ambitious goal of achieving ‘net zero’ Scope 1&2 emissions by 2040. It intends to increase the size of its renewable portfolio to 1 GW by 2025 and 10 GW by 2040.
BPCL owns and operates three oil refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, Kerala, and Bina, Madhya Pradesh, with a total refining capacity of approximately 38 million tonnes. It also has over 20,000 petrol stations and 6,100 LPG distribution centres.
It has planned to install electric vehicle charging stations at approximately 7,000 gas stations over the next five years.
