Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) said on Monday (November 25) that it, in collaboration with Hitachi Energy India Ltd, has obtained a contract to build two high voltage direct current (HVDC) terminal stations as part of the Khavda renewable energy zone Phase V project.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a Notification of Award for the Khavda Nagpur HVDC project from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, according to a regulatory filing.
The project, awarded by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), would help transport renewable energy from Khavda in Gujarat to Nagpur in Maharashtra. The contract entails designing and building +800kV, 6000 MW HVDC terminal stations at Khavda pooling station-2 (KPS2) and Nagpur, spanning a distance of 1,200 km.
This venture is part of a broader interstate transmission infrastructure designed to evacuate 8GW of renewable energy from the Khavda region under Phase V, Part A. This project, which is scheduled to be completed by 2029, is a crucial step towards India’s 500GW renewable energy objective and the first-ever HVDC project to be competed on through a tariff-based competitive bidding process (TBCB).
BHEL and Hitachi Energy India will build bi-directional parallel HVDC bipoles and related AC substations to enable the smooth transmission of renewable energy across states.
