After MPs disrupted the lower house of parliament on Wednesday by demanding a debate of the United States’ allegations of bribery and fraud against the ports-to-power Adani Group, the proceedings were suspended for a second day.
The conglomerate’s billionaire founder, Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and six other individuals have been charged with participating in a $265 million plot to bribe Indian officials in order to secure contracts for solar power delivery in five different regions.
The Adani Group called the accusations “baseless” and promised to “seek all possible legal recourse” in response.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been under fire from Indian opposition parties, particularly the Congress, for allegedly protecting Adani and obstructing enquiries into him in India. They refute the charges.
Members of parliament yelled slogans and demanded a consideration of the Adani claims, disrupting the proceedings for the second day since the start of the winter session this week.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress and a strong opponent of Adani, stated that Gautam Adani ought to be taken into custody.
Gandhi told reporters outside parliament, “The government is protecting the gentleman who has been indicted in the United States.”
The ruling BJP has disassociated itself from the incident, but the government has not commented on the indictment.
