Reliance Industries (RIL) plans to establish over 50 compressed biogas (CBG) plants in the next two years, involving a cost exceeding ₹5,000 Crore. CBG finds applications in the automotive, industrial, and commercial sectors.
RIL has tendered 50 CBG plants for the next two years and will float a tender for the remaining plants soon, revising the total to 106 from 100.
Each plant will have a feedstock processing capacity of 250-500 tpd, producing CBG in the range of 10 to 20 tpd. RIL’s in-house team will handle feedstock sourcing, with discussions ongoing with multiple sugar mills for sugarcane press mud and feedstock.
RIL has established two CBG demo units at its Jamnagar refinery and commissioned the first commercial-scale CBG plant in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh.
Through CBG units, RIL aims to consume 5.5 million tonnes of agro-residue and organic waste, reducing nearly two million tonnes of carbon emissions, and producing 2.5 million tonnes of organic manure annually. This would result in a reduction of about 0.7 million tpa of imported LNG.
The CBG units will facilitate the expansion of CBG and bio-CNG retailing at Jio-BP fuel outlets shortly. Jio-BP outlets are established by Reliance BP Mobility, a joint venture between RIL and British energy major BP.
