According to police on Tuesday, two people have died in a fire at the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) refinery in Vadodara, Gujarat, while another injured person is receiving medical attention. According to inspector A B Mori of the Jawahar Nagar police station, the refinery’s benzene storage tank exploded on Monday afternoon, sparking a fire that later spread to two other nearby tanks.
He claimed that after operations that lasted into the early hours of Tuesday, the fire was contained.
The fire claimed the lives of Dhimant Makwana and Shailesh Makwana. According to Mori, an IOCL official was being treated at a private hospital after suffering injuries.
He stated that the injured person’s condition was stable.
According to officials, the fire was extinguished following a number of fire tenders dispatched from neighbouring cities and towns.
According to an official earlier, the fire was started by a blast at the IOCL refinery in the Koyali neighbourhood on the outskirts of Vadodara.
The “fire was reported at around 3.30 pm in a benzene storage tank (1000 KL capacity) at Gujarat Refinery,” according to a statement released by the IOCL on Monday night.
According to the statement, the nearby water sprinkler system was turned on to put out the fire.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” it continued.
Late Monday night, D J Chavda, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), informed reporters that the adjacent storage tanks were also affected by the fire.
Images revealed dense plumes rising from the refinery that were visible for kilometres. Several employees were seen leaving the IOCL campus after being evacuated.
