India’s coal imports increased by 11.4 percent to 121.1 million tonnes (MT) during the April-August period of the current fiscal year. In the same time period last year, the country imported 108.7 MT of coal.
Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy had stated that India should expand domestic production of the fossil fuel while reducing coal imports.
In August 2024, non-coking coal imports totalled 13.04 MT, up from 11.89 MT the previous year, while coking coal imports totalled 4.53 MT, up from 4.62 MT.
According to data provided by B2B e-commerce platform mjunction, “During April-August 2024, total coal and coke imports stood at 121.18 MT, around 11.4 percent higher than the 108.74 MT imported during the same period last year.”
However, coal imports increased by 5.4 percent in August to 20.70 MT, up from 19.63 MT the previous year.
Non-coking coal imports totalled 78.68 MT between April and August, up from 68.58 MT the previous year. Imports of coking coal totalled 24.79 MT, practically unchanged from the previous year’s figure of 24.85.
