ABB India Ltd. has announced today that its Nelamangala unit has received ‘Water Positive’ certification from The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The unit implemented an Innovative 6R approach towards ‘Water Positivity’ to replenish more water than it consumes at the location, instead of just replacing the amount of water taken from the environment.
The 6R approach induces initiatives such as reduction in freshwater uses, water recycling, rainwater use and recharge, and real-time monitoring of water consumption, recharge, and saving. The Nelamangala unit currently operates 17 rainwater recharge wells, 5 cross wave technology-based recharge tanks, and 2 recharge ponds. ABB captures real-time data of rainwater recharge systems by installing its unique products like water flow meters.
“ABB believes in ‘sustainability in practice’ and follows it to the core of everything company do. It is a key element of our company’s purpose and of the value that the company will create for our customers, employees, and all our stakeholders. Our Nelamangala unit turning ‘Water Positive’ is a step towards continued resource conservation, in line with our 2030 global sustainability commitments. said Sanjeev Sharma, Country Head and Managing Director, ABB India.
ABB India has also received its first water positivity certificate from TERI for one of its six factories in India.
He further added that the company is committed to implementing various other similar environment-friendly measures across all ABB India locations to bring about a sustainable change.
To minimize water consumption, ABB India has restricted the use of turf in the landscape area, installed water-efficient fixtures, and planted drought-tolerant plants in 81% of the landscape area. The unit was able to achieve near 85% of water recyclability with the help of an efficient Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and recycling the treated wastewater for use in gardening and washrooms.
The water positivity index of the Nelamangala plant is 1.24, which demonstrates the company’s significant contribution towards replenishing much quantity of water for the environment than its actual withdrawals for operations. The index also represents units’ extensive dependency on secondary water resources instead of using freshwater resources.
ABB India currently recycles almost 95 percent of the waste generated across all their facilities within their premises to achieve long-term sustainability goals of zero waste to landfill. They have also enhanced the water recyclability by 4 percent in 2021 as compared to the year 2020 which resulted in a reduction of freshwater withdrawal and overall water footprint of the company.
ABB India closed at Rs2,389.25 up by Rs45.15 or 1.93% from its previous closing of Rs2,341.10 on the BSE.
