A unit of Foxconn, which generates roughly a third of the total revenue of the Taiwanese contract manufacturer by selling components to companies like Apple and Lenovo, is aiming to open a plant in Tamil Nadu by the end of next year, multiple sources with knowledge of the plans told ET.
On Wednesday, Brand Cheng, the CEO of Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII), met with MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. As previously reported by ET, a 100-acre plot in the Japanese Industrial Park (JIP) in the Tumakuru district was offered to the FII team on Monday while it was in Karnataka.
Foxconn, the biggest contract manufacturer in the world for Apple, owns FII. Recently, Foxconn made the decision to abandon a joint venture with Vedanta that would have brought chip manufacturing to India and possibly reduced New Delhi’s reliance on northeast Asian semiconductor suppliers.
The Foxconn division produces industrial robots, electronic gadgets, cloud service equipment, and Lenovo, Amazon, Lenovo, Huawei, and Dell among its customers.
According to the report, FII executives have expressed ‘strong interest’ in the offer and are currently examining it. Roughly 5,000 jobs might be created with the initial phase’s expenditure, which is projected to be roughly $200 million.
