Government plans to set up 233 GW new transmission capacity

12 Oct 2022 , 11:15 AM

“Transmission schemes for another 181.5 GW by 2030 have been planned and the same would be taken up for implementation in a progressive manner,” the ministry informed members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to it in a meeting held on Tuesday. “Planning of transmission system for integration of additional 52 GW potential REZ (renewable energy zone) by 2026-27 have been carried out.”

According to a statement, the Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting associated with the Ministry of Power was held in New Delhi. R K Singh, the Union Minister for Power, presided over the meeting.

Krishan Pal Gurjar, a minister of state for heavy industry and power, was also present at the conference. Participating at the conference were members of parliament from various political parties.

Among the MPs present were Chandra Sekhar Sahu, Dhiraj Prasad Sahu, Dinesh Lal Yadav, Khagen Murmu, Pradyut Bordoloi, Ritesh Pandey, and Ramdas Chandrabhanji Tadas.

“Development of National Electricity Grid in India – Its Significance” was the meeting’s topic.

The implementation of green energy corridors, the transmission system for ultra-mega solar power parks, the transmission system for 66.5 GW of renewable energy zones by 2022, and the establishment of 13 RE management centres (REMCs) to address variability and uncertainty of RE (renewable energy) generation are the initiatives for integrating non-fossil fuel energy, it was explained to the members.

Additionally, they were informed that by December 2013, all five of India’s regional grids had been synchronized with the main grid.

In January 2019, the remote Leh region was linked to the national grid through the 220 kv Srinagar-Leh Transmission system.

Since 2014—15, the national grid transmission system has added transmission lines totalling 1,71,149 ckm and a transmission capacity of 6,03,916 MVA.

The national grid’s installed capacity is 404 GW, and the peak demand is currently being satisfied by 216 GW.

The transmission system is the foundation of the power system, it was explained at the conference. The power can be produced anywhere thanks to an integrated transmission network.

The nation currently uses 1,400 billion units of electricity, and by 2030, that number is expected to quadruple.
