Karnataka’s transportation minister, B Sriramulu, stated on Wednesday that the goal is for all 35,000 buses to be electric by 2030. During the legislative assembly’s question period, Congress MLA Tanveer Sait asked a question, to which the minister responded.
“There are around 35,000 buses, and there is a demand to convert them entirely to electricity in order to address environmental and air quality concerns. We are losing money as the price of diesel rises. Discussions are ongoing in this regard, but we want all of our buses to be electric so that we can start turning a profit “said Sriramulu.
“Our goal is for all of our buses to be electric by 2030. By 2030, we’ll make every attempt to have all 35,000 buses run on electricity “He continued by stating that diesel buses cost Rs68.53 per km.
The Minister asserts that the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) leases its use of electric buses rather than purchasing them.
300 electric buses have been ordered under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles – FAME II scheme of the central government, and 75 of them have started running as of August 15, 2022. The cost of these buses per kilometre is Rs 61.90.
Additionally, he stated, an order to run 921 electric buses through Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) under the FAME II plan of the Centre was granted on August 17, 2022; the cost of these buses per kilometre is Rs54.
