NTPC, MHI and MPI ink pact to test viability of hydrogen co-firing in Auraiya gas power plant

17 Oct 2022 , 03:19 PM

NTPC Limited inked an MoU with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Japan, and its subsidiary Mitsubishi Power India Private Limited to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen co-firing with natural gas in MHI 701D gas turbines built at the NTPC Auraiya Gas Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh.

The Auraiya Gas Power Plant has a total installed capacity of 663 MW, with four gas turbines working in combined cycle mode. Ujjwal Kanti Bhattacharya, Director (Projects), NTPC Ltd., Tatsuto Nagayasu, CMD, Mitsubishi Power India, and Hiroyuki Shinohara, Vice President, Mitsubishi Power India signed the MoU.

Under the terms of the agreement, both firms will work together to conduct research and identify essential measures for implementing hydrogen co-firing at the NTPC Auraiya Gas-based combined cycle power plant. The research will identify key actions for co-firing at various hydrogen percentages, including 5%, 15%, 30%, 50%, and 100%, with NTPC supplying the hydrogen necessary for the project.

NTPC plans to play a significant role in energy transformation and meeting COP26 obligations. As part of this project, NTPC is investigating several novel hydrogen-generating technologies as well as hydrogen utilisation in order to assure future preparedness, create the necessary competencies and technical experience, and integrate with national decarbonization and hydrogen mission aims.

At around 3.22 PM, NTPC was trading at Rs168.10 up by 1.88% from its previous closing of Rs165 on the BSE.
