Bridgwater, in southwest England, will be the site of Tata Group’s new multibillion-pound battery manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom, the company announced on Wednesday.
Tata’s first ‘gigafactory’ outside of India is slated to open in Somerset County, southwest England, and will cost £4 billion ($5 billion).
Agratas, the worldwide battery division of the Tata Group, verified on Wednesday that the 40 GWh plant would be constructed at the Gravity Smart Campus in Bridgwater.
‘Our multibillion-pound investment will bring state-of-the-art technology to Somerset, helping to supercharge Britain’s transition to electric mobility whilst creating thousands of jobs in the process,’ Tom Flack, CEO of Agratas, said.
According to the announcement, construction will begin gradually, and battery production is expected to begin in 2026.
It further said that its ‘first customers’ would be JLR and Tata Motors.
