Tuesday saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for six pumped hydro storage projects with a combined capacity of 6,790 MW by state-owned THDC India Ltd and the Maharashtra government. This agreement represents an investment of over Rs33,600 crore.
The agreement will make it easier to set up projects in a timely manner and to carry out surveys, investigations, and the creation of thorough project reports. According to the government, this plan will allow THDC to fully utilize the potential of unutilized pumped storage projects in Maharashtra.
Under this arrangement, six projects are planned: the 700 MW Malshej Ghat pumped storage project; the 1,950 MW Aruna project; the 1,250 MW Kharari project; the 1,000 MW Humbarli Birmani project; the 1,200 MW Aruna Kolamb project; and the 690 MW Morawadi Majarewadi project.
The Maharashtra government would assist in the process of allocating water required for the projects as part of the collaboration, including the initial filling and yearly consumptive requirements.
For every project, THDC will draft comprehensive project reports, which it will then submit to the Maharashtra Department of Water Resources and the Central Electricity Authority for approval.
