3M India announced that 3M, Minnesota will phase out the production of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and work to eliminate the use of PFAS across its product portfolio by the end of 2025.
3M’s decision is based on careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of the evolving external landscape, which includes a number of factors such as accelerating regulatory trends aimed at reducing or eliminating the presence of PFAS in the environment, as well as shifting stakeholder expectations.
All fluoropolymers, fluorinated fluids, and PFAS-based additive products will be phased out by 3M. We will assist customers in making an orderly transition. During the transition period, 3M intends to fulfill current contractual obligations, stated the company in its media release.
The company stated that it has already reduced its use of PFAS over the past three years through ongoing research and development, and will continue to innovate new solutions for customers.
With these two actions, 3M pledges to innovate toward a world less reliant on PFAS. 3M’s products are suitable for their intended applications. 3M will continue to address PFAS remediation and litigation by defending ourselves in court or through negotiated settlements, as appropriate.
The current annual net sales of manufactured PFAS are around $1.3 billion, with EBITDA margins of around 16%.
