A Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL)-led consortium has been awarded a contract by Indian Railways to deliver 80 sleeper class Vande Bharat trains, with a total value of over Rs 9,600 crore. The project is expected to be completed within a period of 72 months.
There is a growing demand to deploy sleeper class Vande Bharat or Train18 trainsets due to their capability to run on long-distance routes like Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah.
At the moment, all the operational Vande Bharat trains offer only chair car and executive chair car categories, and they do not provide any sleeper class options.
In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, the BHEL-led consortium announced that it has secured a contract for 80 Vande Bharat trains as part of the Indian Railways’ mega tender.
The contract entails the delivery of 80 trains, with each unit priced at Rs 120 crore, excluding taxes and duties.
As per the regulatory filing, the AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) order has also been included in the agreement, with a duration of 35 years.
Technology Partner, the consortium, comprises BHEL and Titagarh Wagons.
The regulatory filing states that the consortium is responsible for furnishing, improving, managing, and servicing the dedicated area assigned in the manufacturing facility at ICF Chennai, as well as two depots designated by Indian Railways.
