CAIT to go on nation- wide agitation for GST legislation simplification

18 Jul 2022 , 09:18 AM

Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has announced that it would start a national movement on July 26 to call for the GST legislation to be simplified. According to CAIT, the agitation’s goal is to challenge the GST council’s “dictatorial functioning,” which will begin in Bhopal.

The merchants’ organization also emphasized the significant cost of unneeded tax compliance on businesses and how the complex GST taxation regulations are to blame.

The GST Council’s many changes to the taxes rules, according to CAIT, are in conflict with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of making it easier to do business in India. The trader’s group repeatedly emphasized the need for a thorough review of the GST Act and legislation to “simplify & rationalize” the tax system.

CAIT voiced opposition to the five percent GST on pre-packaged and pre-labeled food goods earlier this month. The trader’s organization reportedly requested the GST Council, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and state finance ministers to reverse the decision and hold talks with different stakeholders who are impacted by it, according to a Deccan Herald story.

Earlier in June, the trader’s group also demanded that the rules of the GST Act be reviewed. In a meeting with Sitharaman in June, CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal emphasized the importance of expanding the GST revenue base by streamlining the GST Act and regulations. A Joint GST Committee made up of top GST tax authorities and district-specific commerce representatives was another proposal made by Khandelwal, according to an avenue mail report.
