First indigenously made SCR catalysts are produced by BHEL to reduce NOx emissions

23 Aug 2023 , 01:51 PM

The first batch of indigenous SCR Catalysts for reducing NOx emissions from thermal power plants has been successfully produced, according to state-owned engineering company Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), which announced this on Wednesday.

According to a BHEL release, the government’s ‘Make in India’ strategy has reached a critical milestone with the production of these selective catalytic reactors (SCR), which were previously imported.

Renuka Gera, Director (Industrial Systems & Products), BHEL, from the company’s Solar Business Division (SBD) plant in Bengaluru, reportedly flagged off the first batch of locally produced SCR catalysts for the 5×800 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Station in Telangana.

To address NOx abatement in thermal power plants, BHEL established a facility within its SBD unit to manufacture SCR catalysts.

When coal is burned, the nitrogen that is bonded to the coal is transformed into products including nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O).

These substances are collectively referred to as nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are significant pollutants. The Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO) had placed an order for SCRs for the 5×800 MW Yadadri thermal power station after taking into account the Ministry of Environment and Forest’s notification and acknowledging the detrimental long-term consequences of NOx.

In addition, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) for 1×660 MW Sagardighi thermal power station, NALCO for 1×18.5 MW Damanjodi thermal power station, and Maharashtra State Power Generation Co Ltd (MAHAGENCO) for 1×660 MW Bhusawal thermal power station.

For thermal power plants, BHEL provides a full range of environmentally friendly technologies as part of its commitment to environmental preservation.

Along with high efficiency boilers, BHEL also offers electrostatic precipitators, flue gas desulphurization systems, and selective catalyst reactors. For these products, the business has indigenously developed technology it acquired from the industry leader, NANO, Republic of Korea.
