GE Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have entered into a partnership to collaborate on the production of fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force’s LCA-Mk-II, Tejas.
The announcement was made during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States. The agreement between GE Aerospace and HAL involves the possibility of jointly manufacturing GE Aerospace’s F414 engines in India, subject to obtaining the required export authorization.
This partnership is seen as a significant step in strengthening defense cooperation between India and the US. GE Aerospace’s commitment to deliver 99 engines for the LCA-Mk-II program will be advanced through this agreement.
The collaboration positions GE Aerospace to expand its product range in India, including the F404 engines currently used in LCA Mk1 and Mk1A aircraft. Furthermore, GE Aerospace has been chosen to lead the prototype development, testing, and certification of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, utilizing the F414-INS6 engine.
This partnership is notable as India traditionally sourced its military jets from Russia and European consortia. GE will also work with the Indian government on the AMCA Mk2 engine program.
