Google does not support the idea of an Indian self-regulatory organization

12 Aug 2022 , 09:54 AM

American technology giant Google has voiced concerns with the design, make-up, and operation of the self-regulatory grievance appellate committee (GAC) proposed by Twitter, Meta Inc., and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), and social networking platform Facebook. The consumer internet industry group IAMAI, the three businesses, and others have met informally over the past several days to discuss the fundamentals.
.
Although Meta and Twitter backed IAMAI’s suggestions, Google officials argued that a self-regulatory GAC may compel businesses to alter their own rules on how they manage material on their platforms, one individual said.
Another source said that the social media intermediaries and IAMAI had contacted the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to request further time to implement the self-regulatory GAC.
