The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2021 was retracted by the Centre on Wednesday. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of information technology (IT), was given the approval to withdraw the Bill in Parliament on Wednesday.
The Joint Committee of Parliament (JCP) debated the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, in considerable depth. The comprehensive legal framework for the digital ecosystem has 12 recommendations and 81 proposed revisions, the minister told the other MPs when explaining the “reasons for the withdrawal.”
“A complete legal framework is being developed taking the JCP’s report into consideration. In light of the above, it is suggested that “The Personal Data Protection Measure, 2019″ be withdrawn and replaced with a new bill that adheres to the overall legislative framework,” he continued.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, minister of state for information technology, stated in a tweet that the JCP report on the Personal Data Protection Bill had identified several concerns that were important but outside the purview of current laws governing online privacy.
In his tweet, he stated that “privacy is a fundamental right of Indian residents and a trillion-dollar digital economy demands world standard cyber regulations.”
